What is BB Cream?

The BB cream craze is now everywhere even MAC is going to launch a BB Cream, but do you really know what BB Cream is..? This article will help make you understand a little bit more of what BB Cream is exactly.

BB Cream is shorten from Blemish Balm Cream, BB Cream was introduced to patients who have undergone cosmetic/skin surgery and wanted to wear make-up during the recovery process, the first BB Cream was created in Germany by dermatologists with soothing and healing properties which was safe to wear for patients on their skin during the recovery process.

The BB Cream made public by Korean celebrities who started to wear BB Cream which started to attract attention to the product and now has increase availability for everyone. With many Korean brands creating huge ranges of all types of BB cream for all types of skin, it is said to be the '4 in 1 cream - to sooth, moisturise, protect and coverage', BB Cream is a make-up product with properties which acts similar to skincare products.

FAQ's

Does BB Cream come in various shades?

Most BB Creams only come in one shade because they are said to adapt to your skin tone, because they target the Asian skin the shades are generally quite pale and light. But some do come in various shades for example Missha's M Perfect Cover BB Cream comes in two shades *21 and *23 (*21 being lighter). With the Missha M Perfect Cover example the *21 is lighter with the undertones of yellow and *23 is just slightly darker with slight rosy undertones, in most cases it not just choosing the right shades but checking what undertones the product carries.

Can BB Creams heal my scars/blemishes and does it improve my skin?

BB Creams were first created for patients who have undergone cosmetic/skin surgery therefore most BB Creams contain properties to heal, moisturise, even out skin tone, add radiance and usually contains natural ingredients which does not irritate the sensitive skin.

But having said that BB Cream is not a miracle worker, even though it contains skincare properties you need to treat this as a make-up product. Therefore you still need to thoroughly cleanse the skin at night to remove all BB Cream residue off the skin, you will still need to follow up with your usual skincare regime.

Personally rather than saying it heals it does improve my skin by evening out my skin tone and the condition of it. I'm not sure if it heals my blemishes because I use skincare products and take skincare supplements but BB Creams does not irritate my skin or make my blemishes worse which is a good start!

Can i use BB Cream alone?

Again, you need to treat all BB Creams as a make-up product so this does not replace your daily moisturiser, you still have to apply a moisturiser after cleansing. Whether you want to use a primer it is personal preference. Some (almost all) BB Cream contains SPF so it is again personal preference if you want to apply an alternative SPF product.

How should you apply BB Cream?

The texture of a BB Cream is similar to a foundation almost like a cream, due to the coverage some are thicker and some are more liquid. Many users apply using their finger tips because the texture is like a cream, by using the fingers it is easier to blend without leaving streak marks. But again it is up to personal preference if you want to use a foundation brush or sponge.
